A daring theft of three horses was perpetrated at Carleton Place on Saturday night and up to the present the thief or thieves seem to have made a clean getaway. A car load of horses, the property of Mr. Wm. Jamieson, had just reached Carleton Place from the West and were to be offered for sale in a few days.

The McFarland Construction Company of Picton has been awarded the tender for the first of three stages in the construction of the new Hershey Chocolate of Canada $7,000,000 plant here. It was announced on Tuesday that heavy machinery and other equipment will move onto the site at once and work is expected to commence Monday. The first stage of the contract calls for the building of access roads to the plant and the grading, clearing and leveling of the ground in preparation for the foundation. A spokesman for the McFarland company said that several local men will, in all probability, be employed to work on the project which should be completed within a month's time and ready for the second stage of construction.

The 26 service station operators in Smiths Falls, finding themselves in the "no man's land" of a gasoline price war in Perth and Brockville, have been forced to have their gas profit reduced by up to one-third in order to meet the competition. Commencing last Friday night, the price of gas at all local stations dropped 4.6 of a cent per gallon. Low test gas is now 40.9 cents and high test is 45.9 cents. Although there is now gas war underway locally, and none expected, the oil companies decided that the dealers in Smiths Falls were in an unfair position, since travelers and others would tend to by-pass the town and purchase their gas either at Perth or Brockville.

Joel Gorman is set to break new ground in Smiths Falls. The long-time Smiths Falls firefighter, who started his career in town as a volunteer back in 1975, was sworn in as chief at Monday's regular council meeting. Gorman replaces Harold Jordan, who retired at the end of last month. The father of four says he's honoured to take over the helm, knowing he's going to have a big job ahead. Restructuring of the department will leave him alone at the top - with the deputy's position, one he had filled since 1994, now eliminated. While becoming chief may not have been his immediate goal when he first joined Smiths Falls 26 years ago, Gorman says he has taken his fire training seriously over the years to help him rise through the ranks. He shifted from volunteer to full-time firefighter in 1978, assuming the deputy chief's post in '94.
