Holiday season highlights needs
Posted Jan 6, 2011 By Marla Shook-JohnsonThe hustle and bustle, the rush to get that perfect gift for those special people in your lives, the rush of traffic and race for that last parking spot.
On top of all that, don't forget the wrapping, mailing the Christmas cards in time, tidying up the house for visiting family and preparing the perfect meal. And always, there is that "Oops" moment, when one tiny item like tape, or napkins were forgotten and the rush is back on to race back to the store to complete the holiday atmosphere.
Ahh, Christmas - I am glad another holiday season is behind us. I love Christmas, but boy oh boy, can it ever run you off your feet.
It is occasions such as Christmas that make me count my blessings. It is wonderful to be around family and friends, some not seen but on special occasions. This year really was a testament to what a wonderful family and network of friends I do have. Thank you all.
From Christmas get-togethers up to Christmas day, I really can say my friends, family and extended family are absolutely, without question, amazing...remarkable...I can't really find a word.
It is also at times like these that I think about those less fortunate, those without a family network, those without the basic necessities of life. While this is the time of year most people donate to causes such as the food bank and the Salvation Army, the need truly is year round.
Once again the annual Build a Mountain of Food Campaign brought in a fantastic total - 31,450 pounds of food and $13,429.79 in cash for eight regional food banks. Of that total the Smiths Falls Community Food Bank received $250 and 800 pounds of food. Wow! What a fantastic job done by Hugh Colton, and all volunteers who contributed their time, and to all those who made a generous donation to those in need this holiday season.
The Salvation Army also had a great need this year, with more than 400 applications in for Christmas hampers.
