Montague resident gets his answers

EDITOR'S NOTE: This response to a previous letter written by a Montague resident will be the last The Record News EMC will run on this issue prior to the Oct. 25. election.

Dear Editor:

Reeve John MacTavish feels it's time to clear the air in response to a letter submitted by Montague resident Don Page and printed in a local newspaper last week.

Mr. Page stated in his letter that he had recently attended a special meeting held at the Rosedale Hall, a meeting for the residents of Atironto to come and voice their concerns about their streets. Why was Mr. Page at this meeting? Is he a resident of Atironto?

He also stated that I had declared a conflict of interest at this meeting and he wanted to know why? Well, Mr. Page there were three reasons for me declaring conflict of interest: 1) I am a resident of Atironto, 2)I have supported the people of Atironto 100 per cent when it comes to the quality of work done to our streets. I felt a mistake was made and that this type of surfacing should not have been put in any built up areas. I have also voiced my concerns about this several times since the work has been done. 3) I also had enough faith in my council that they would do the right thing by these people.

I'm more than willing to work alongside the people of Atironto and the surrounding built up areas to find a solution to this problem, but given legal advice prior to the meeting I felt it was the right thing to do at the time, to declare conflict of interest for these reasons.

Further to answer your question, did I receive information from the township staff? Supposedly information given to them by the company doing the work that the people would not be satisfied with the surfacing they were providing if it was done in built up areas. The answer to your question is no. The township staff was not given this information. Therefore, how could they possibly pass on information to me they did not have so I could provide it to the rest of council prior to the signing of the contract and the work being done?

Where did you get your information, Mr. Page?

So now that the truth it out Mr. Page I think it is time to step aside and let the Township of Montague have a clean and fair election this time. There are three candidates running in this election for Reeve and may the best man for the job win.

Sincerely,

John MacTavish,

Reeve of Montague Township.
