100 years ago - November 16, 1909

Owing to the demand for advertising space, pages two and seven of the Record have been made local pages, and in each issue interesting local news will be found on these pages.

Navigation on the Rideau Canal is closed.

The weather is hardening up a little and there are signs that winter is not far off.

Those who go gunning for black and grey squirrels will wisely recollect that the game laws with reference to these beautiful little animals have recently been changed and that the open season is not now from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1 - as for some years past. Under present regulations, squirrels may not be hunted, taken or killed in this district until Dec. 1.

There is on exhibition in the Record window the biggest turnip it would seem that ever grew. It is 38 inches around and weighs 19 pounds. It was grown on George McLellan's farm in Franktown.

50 years ago - November 19, 1959

Over the first nine months of 1959, Smiths Falls has shown a 50 per cent reduction in claims for compensation benefits.

Two husbands and their wives were each fined $10 and $4.50 by Police Magistrate D.C. Smith this week when they were found guilty of creating a disturbance. The foursome, according to police, was engaged in an argument on Main Street in the vicinity of the Russell Hotel when police arrived on scene and broke things up.

A gradual increase in the unemployment figures can be expected due to the lay-off of seasonal workers.

Town Council approved the expenditure of $500 to repair Rideau Avenue and raise its level several inches. The other $500 will be paid by Montague Township, and the work will be done either in the spring or as a winter work project.

Smiths Falls Police are continuing their investigation into last night's (Nov. 18) break-in at Smiths Falls Bottling Works on Abbott Street, which netted $6,501 in cash.

10 years ago - Nov. 17, 1999

Smiths Falls Town Council has chosen to no longer set cab fares in Smiths Falls.

The Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute senior football team ran away with the Lanark-Leeds-Grenville-Renfrew Football League title, after a convincing 23-6 win over the hometown Renfrew Raiders.

Hundreds of area residents turned out for the Remembrance Day ceremonies, which included a return of the two-minute 'wave' of silence.

It's just a matter of days before the Victoria Avenue railway station becomes town property. Council gave third reading to the bylaw giving the green light to an agreement with both CP and VIA Rail to purchase the building for $1. The town has also officially entered a 10-year lease agreement for 0.35 ha (hectare) of property around the building. In exchange, the town has agreed to lease 300 square feet of the building's ground floor to VIA for its rail passenger services.

The agreements are set to come into effect Dec. 1.

The new $12,500 heating system has been approved for the library and should be installed by contractor D.W. Stanzel within the next week.
