EMC Lifestyle - Under the excellent direction of Mrs. Susan Thompson, LAWS will be holding a two-day book sale July 18 and 19. The Book Room at the LAWS garage will be open Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. New titles are arriving in most categories and there will be selected specials. This is a tremendous opportunity to pick up gently-read paperbacks, non-fiction, cookbooks and more to enjoy on your summer holidays.

LAWS YARD SALE SEEKING DONATIONS

With our second Yard Sale of the season now behind us, LAWS is seeking donations for our next sale to be held at our Open House, Saturday, Aug. 8. We are looking for gently used, high-quality items that are sale-able, clean and in good condition. Please drop them at the LAWS garage. We do not have space for T.V.'s or large furniture items.

We are grateful for any donations such as housewares, collectables, jewellery, animal items, antiques, plates, gently read modern paperbacks, Christmas crafts and more. Donations are being accepted until July 31 only.

We will be unable to accept donations after that time. Please note that August 8 will be our final Yard Sale of the season. For any questions on donations, please contact yard sale director Elizabeth Sly at 613-284-8129.

Good reading, good eating - great support!

With so many fabulous summer parties on the horizon, why not pick up a copy of LAWS' new cookbook? It makes a perfect gift for the host or hostess and you can feel good knowing the money helped shelter animals.

Holly Ault's fabulous cookbook entitled 'If Cats Could Cook' is based on her misadventures in the kitchen with her cats. The book includes a varied collection of simple, straight-forward, delicious recipes that include meat, salads, soups, vegetarian, desserts and more. Throughout the book, Ault has woven stories of her cat's great meat heists, their penchant for sweets, salad greens and all manner of comfort food.

Illustrated with colour photos of Ault's cats and black and white photos of whimsical kitchen gadgets, this charming book follows what a cat's fine dining code would be: use simple ingredients, don't fuss over preparation and present a dish that will have people purring for seconds.

An ideal gift for lovers of food and cats, the cost of If Cats Could Cook is only $20 (no tax). Half of the proceeds from the sales of the book go directly to LAWS.

This cookbook is available at the following locations: Perth: Perth Courier, The Book Nook, Jo's Clothes, Perth Veterinary Clinic, Pet Valu, Smiths Falls: Smith Falls Vet, Pampered Paws, Pet Valu, LAWS shelter (Glenview Road), Merrickville: Merrickville Vet, Paws a Bit, Carleton Place: Natural Pet Foods, Lanark: North Lanark Veterinary Service (Dr. Sue Martin), Nature Lovers Book Store.

THIS WEEK'S PETS

LAWS friend and supporter Sharon Nichols has come up with a fabulous idea. She has put together a beautiful cat basket filled with bedding, toys, treats and a few other surprises, as a gift to be included with a cat that might be more difficult to place. We have decided to feature Pig and Tinkerbell this week as two cats that we are anxious to find a home for. Not only will Pig and Tinkerbell come with this beautiful basket, but we are adopting them at a 2-for-1 adoption rate price. Tinkerbell, Pig and LAWS send out a huge thank you to Sharon.

Pig and Tinkerbell are both beautiful cats but their advancing age makes them harder to place. Both cats are 12-years-old, short-haired and in excellent health. Pig is a brown and white tabby neutered male and Tinkerbell is a pastel calico who has been spayed. These two cats have grown up together and would like to be adopted into one family. Cats can live well past 20 years of age, so these two sweet but senior kitties still have many years of love to share.

Poppy is a very handsome five-year-old Husky. This beautiful and strong dog is black and white with piercing blue eyes. Poppy was surrendered to our shelter as his owner is moving to Ottawa to a place without a yard, clearly not the residence for a Husky. Poppy has been known to chase cats, but will not hurt them. He absolutely loves children and has spent winters pulling them around on snow tubes and sleds. Poppy has a great personality, is submissive, fun-loving and friendly. He is hoping to find a great family, with a big fenced-in property, preferably with kids where he can live a long and happy life.

Sunny is a handsome and outgoing two-year-old, male neutered Lab/Hound X. Sunny is appropriately named because of his sunny personality. This young dog is curious, friendly and just brimming with enthusiasm to start each day. Sunny is a great mix offering the Lab loyalty and intelligence mixed with the Hound's affectionate and outgoing nature. The ideal adopter would offer Sunny an active lifestyle with lots of daily exercise, a fenced yard, be willing to enroll him in obedience or work with him to learn basic commands. Most importantly, Sunny's new adopter should have tons of patience, love and attention to offer this special loyal companion.
