Agricultural hall tips hat to Queen Elizabeth II

Posted May 31, 2012 By Stacey Roy

EMC Events - This Sunday's Lombardy Agriculture Hall tea fundraiser is certainly an event fit for a queen.

The June 3 celebration will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at the hall and is in honour of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee year. Attendees are encouraged to come with their favourite afternoon tea hat for the day.

"We sort of want to focus on hats because you never see her without one," explained Aline Hicks, co-chair of the event with Bonnie Covell. "It fits right in."

A vintage hat display will be set up for visitors to peruse as well as fashion vendors from Vickie's, Two Crazy Ladies and Stella & Dot Jewelry.

Guests will be served tea, a selection of sandwiches, cookies and squares while they enjoy a colourful fashion show at 2 p.m. courtesy of Two Crazy Ladies.

"It's going to be vintage and new," Hicks added. "It will be a fun afternoon."

Tickets for the afternoon are $10 each and can be purchased at the door this Sunday. All funds raised through the afternoon event will go towards the operating budget for the Lombardy Agriculture Society.

"It takes a lot of money to keep our grounds and buildings going," Hicks said.

The hydro alone for these facilities can run the volunteer organization $1,800 a month.

This unique fundraising event was born through a conversation Hicks had with her mother and active agriculture society volunteer, Marjorie Walker who along with Louis Hunter will be serving tea this weekend. Hicks says she enjoys following the younger royals these days, but does remember being taken to Ottawa in the 1950s to see the Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"I was only little but I remember it," Hicks said.

The Agricultural Society invites everyone to come down this Sunday and enjoy a spot of tea and cookies in celebration of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
