Historical society launches new speaker series
Posted Jan 26, 2012 By EMC NewsEMC Events - Join the Smiths Falls & District Historical Society on Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. for a lecture and sneak peak at the upcoming Virtual Museum of Canada exhibition entitled "The Legacy of Frost & Wood: Outstanding in their Field." This lecture will be hosted by Heritage House Museum as a part of an ongoing speaker series with the Smiths Falls & District Historical Society.
The Frost & Wood Company was founded in 1839 by partners Ebenezer Frost and Alexander Wood. For the next 116 years, the Frost & Wood Company would remain in business and become one of the largest employers in Smiths Falls. Frost & Wood not only impacted the community, but the farm implements they manufactured were the principal farm implements used in rural communities for generations.
When Frost & Wood eventually closed its doors in 1955, the factory was demolished down to the very last brick. The company, which had held a prominent place in the heart of Smiths Falls, was no more and left no lasting memorial to the great agricultural industry. With the help of the Virtual Museum of Canada, the Heritage House Museum has collected photographs, video, oral histories and archival material which captures the legacy of Frost & Wood and the lasting impact the company had on the Town of Smiths Falls. During the presentation on Jan. 31 you will experience what research, images and video footage have been gathered in the creation of the virtual exhibit. This will be the only opportunity to have a sneak peak at the exhibit before its formal launch later in 2012.
It is sure to be an entertaining evening whether you are a collector, historian or if you just enjoy taking a walk down memory lane.
Admission to the lecture is by donation with all proceeds going to the Smiths Falls & District Historical Society.
Currently the Society is in the midst of a rebirth and welcomes new members to come on board and help to continue to preserve the history of Smiths Falls.
