EMC Entertainment - A new social venue has opened up for 30 plus singles in Smiths Falls and area that encourages individuals to retire Bruce Springsteen's popular song 'dancing in the dark' and step into a new, fun alternative.

Judy Butcher invites all singles aged 30 plus to attend the next adult aged singles dance at the Brockville Legion Feb. 11. Plans are in place to host a similar event in Smiths Falls in April.
Judy Butcher of Easton's Corners wanted to get out and meet people while having fun and decided organizing a 30-plus singles dance was just the thing.
"A lot of people like to get out instead of looking at the four walls," Butcher said.
If you are one of these people than mark your calendar for the next singles dance in Brockville, which will be held Feb. 11 from 8:30 - 12:30 p.m. at the Brockville Legion (180 Park Street).
This is the second dance organized by the local woman. January's initial event saw almost 60 people attend the Jan. 14 social, including a handful from Smiths Falls. For this reason Butcher hopes to set up a local dance in April at the Smiths Falls Legion (Main Street).
Attendees came out for various reasons - to be social or to get some exercise. The need to get moving is what inspired Butcher who thought back to her childhood of dancing with her father throughout the night. This translated into a love of dance, which led her to step dancing and later ballroom dancing.
"You don't even know you're exercising," Butcher added. "It's actually fun."
That is why one gentleman - an 87 year old from Brockville - attended this month's dance. He was told by his doctor to not walk outdoors in the icy conditions for fear of falling, but that dancing would be a safer alternative.
In matters of the heart, meeting local singles in a neutral environment also has its benefits in terms of safety. Butcher said many of the people she met at the Jan. 14 dance were not the type to go online for love for fear of predators or those on for a laugh.
"It's a real problem I guess," she said.
Face-to-face meetings provide an added benefit of assessing chemistry that the keyboard just can't compete with. According to Butcher, chemistry was certainly in the air for some possible couples this month.
The idea of single dances for adults is not new. Both Smiths Falls and Brockville at one time held their own 39 club, but for some reason they died out. There was also a social club for single parents looking for companionship.
Butcher welcomes anyone interested in seeing what their dances are about to stop by the Feb. 11 date at the Brockville Legion. Tickets cost $10 each and are available at the door. For more information please call Judy at 613-283-8444.
