Is Smiths Falls Canada's Ultimate Fishing Town?

Posted Jul 29, 2010 By Ryland Coyne

EMC Sports - Wakefield has done it...why not Smiths Falls?

Last week, the tiny west Quebec village won a contest run through The Sports Network (TSN) called the Kraft Celebration Tour.

Local residents wrote in to the network, outlining a need within their sporting community. They noted a lack of facilities for young people and a lack of a community centre. Of all the nominations in the province of Quebec, it came down to a two-town race with Beauceville.

On-line voting over a 24-hour period saw Wakefield emerge as the clear winner. For their efforts, they will receive $25,000 for a community upgrade from Kraft and the network's signature show 'Sportscentre' will broadcast live from there at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 26.

JoAnne Keays has a similar plan in store for our community as well, having entered Smiths Falls in the WFN (World Fishing Network) Ultimate Fishing Town contest.

In addition to spreading the word about the initiative, she needs everyone's help to support the nomination.

Working to an Aug. 16 deadline (WFN extended the contest two weeks), she wants to add more stories, photos or video that backs up this community's claim as the ultimate fishing town.

According to the contest website (www.wfn.tv/fishingtown/), the winning community will receive a $25,000 community 'refresh'.

Smiths Falls' entry is as follows:

"The town of Smiths Falls welcomes you to the heart of the Rideau Canal waterway - a world heritage UNESCO designated site since 2007. From pedaling to paddling, the Rideau Heritage Route has something for every kind of outdoor enthusiast. The corridor boasts clean waters and excellent fishing, fabulous golf courses, three Provincial Parks, sixteen conservation areas, a number of hiking/multi use trails. Fishing enthusiasts will find a myriad of accommodations to compliment their stay. Boaters can dock at Victoria Park at the heart of the Rideau Canal. A free transportation shuttle is available Friday - Sunday throughout the summer months. There is a variety of outdoor bait and tackle stores located within the community to meet all your needs. Please visit www.smithsfalls.ca for more information or call 1-888-983-4124 for more information."

To make it stand out, however, this initial nomination will need some supporting material, information to back up the claims.

Dozens of other communities across the country including nearby Elizabethtown-Kitley and Seeley's Bay have also entered the contest and have provided plenty of photos and other material.

"The contest will give the winning community a $25,000 donation to help with a community fund raiser and exposure on a national television network. Heaven knows would could sure use the money, but better yet the exposure to our beautiful sensational fishing opportunity," JoAnne notes in an email to the EMC.

You can either add your own supporting material by downloading photos and stories to www.wfn.tv/fishingtown/ or contact JoAnne with your ideas at smilesentations@cogeco.net.
