Movie theaters becoming less of an enjoyable experience
Posted Jul 15, 2010 By Ashley KulpWhile everyone enjoys being able to rent and watch movies in the comfort of their own home, there's nothing quite like going to the movie theater and having that big screen experience, complete with yummy popcorn.
But with the cost of movies skyrocketing (not to mention the exorbitant amount of money one has to shell out for snacks), I have cut back on frequenting the theater unless there's a movie I'm just dying to see.
I was looking forward to the experience a few weeks ago when a couple of my co-workers and I decided to take in the newest movie in the Twilight series, 'Eclipse.' While I confess, I'm not really a huge fan of the movies, I had seen the others in the series and was looking forward to a night out.
The night started off well. After a nice dinner, we all set out to the theater to see the movie. It was a fairly young crowd, which I expected since the Twilight series has attracted the attention of both young and old (or young at heart) and there was a great deal of chattering and excitement that could be heard throughout the theater before the movie started. That's fine with me as long as the talking is kept to a minimum once the movie begins. However that wasn't the case. In fact, one group of movie-goers managed to talk through the entire movie. I wish I was embellishing about that, but I'm not. And I'm not talking about whispering, there was no attempt made at lowering their voices. I did make my displeasure known loudly at a few instances, but to no avail.
This all leads me to the question: Why come to a movie just to talk through it? If you want to catch up and chat with friends, go out to dinner or for a coffee. Don't ruin the movie experience for everyone else by talking through it. It makes it harder to focus on what's happening on the screen, so you're forced to make another trip to the theater and purchase another ticket to see the movie again. Or if you're me, you don't even want to bother to do that because the previous experience has soured you on the movie.
The full movie experience isn't a cheap one and I don't know about anyone else, but I don't have money to just throw away.
These days, people need to have a little more respect and courtesy for others. I'm really not asking much, maybe just a please or thank you when a door is held open for you and if it's not too much trouble, silence when watching a movie.
