World suddenly not quite as fun

Posted Jul 1, 2010 By Ryland Coyne

EMC Sports - He's always been a larger-than-life figure in the local sports scene, ready with a friendly greeting and a big smile. He had a way to brighten your day, no matter how miserable you were feeling at the time.

His electric personality made him friends wherever he went, and his heart of gold and generous spirit saw him support and contribute to a seemingly endless list of community projects and organizations from hockey and figure skating to the Victoria Avenue Station Theatre.

That's why the passing of Gerry Lowe comes as such a shock and will be felt throughout the community. Few in town did not know this fun-loving gentleman who did so much, particularly for the young people of Smiths Falls, but was reluctant to accept credit for all that he did. He wouldn't tell you what he did. Anything I ever heard of the man's philanthropy came from others, whether covering certain costs for the Jr. A Bears year-end banquet or helping raise funds for the Cancer Classic or other causes across the region.

From my youngest son's point of view, Mr. Lowe will always be known for his late-summer hockey camp. Over so many years, he ran an affordable program that allowed hundreds of kids to have so much fun at the Youth Arena, helping them get ready for the upcoming season. What a wonderful gift to the community.

Gerry passed away suddenly last Friday, June 25 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa. He is survived by his wife Elaine (nee LaVallee), his children Brett (Karen) of Montague Township, Kurt of Merrickville, Karen (Ian) of Stittsville and Jennifer (Christian) of Ottawa as well as grandchildren Chris, Allyson, Chelsea and Heather.

Friends were able to pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home in Smiths Falls on Monday and Tuesday. The funeral took place on Wednesday, June 30 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church at 11 a.m.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family of a truly great man.

Befitting his ongoing support of youth in this community, the family has asked that contributions be directed to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County, 18 William St. E., in Smiths Falls, K7A 1C2, 613-283-0570.
