Convenience store robber gets four years in penitentiary

EMC News - On Feb. 7, 2010, the Express Variety on Lombard Street was robbed by a lone male brandishing a pellet pistol. David Francis Guertin, 25, Smiths Falls, was arrested for the offences and has been in custody since that time.

He has recently pleaded guilty to the offences and has received a four-year penitentiary term. With time already served prior to sentencing, Guertin has a 42-month sentence left to serve.

KEMPTVILLE MAN CHARGED

An investigation into a break and enter at a Smiths Falls residence has resulted in charges against a 31-year-old Kemptville area man. The man was arrested after allegedly breaking into an ex-girlfriend's residence in the early hours of May 29. The man is charged with break and enter with intent, criminal harassment and breach of probation.

He appeared in court May 31 for a bail hearing. The name of the accused is being withheld to protect the identity of the victim.

POLICE LAY DRUG CHARGES

On May 28, Smiths Falls Police executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant at a residence on Beckwith Street North. Police seized approximately $6,000 in drugs and an undisclosed amount of currency.

Charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of proceeds of crime, in connection to the incident is Allan Clifford Chant, 28 of Smiths Falls. Chant was held in custody for a bail hearing.

PROBATION BREACH CHARGE

On May 22 police responded to a complaint on Russell St. E. Charged with breach of probation is a 43-year-old Smiths Falls resident. Robert Theriault will be held in custody pending a bail hearing.

OSHAWA MAN FACES CHARGE

On May 20 police arrested a male for breach of his recognizance from Durham region. Charged further with resisting arrest is a 31-year-old of Oshawa. Jason Price will appear in court at a later date.

TRAFFIC STOP

On May 20 police conducted a traffic stop on Lombard Street. Charged with possession of a controlled substance is a 44-year-old Smiths Falls resident. Rhonda McCreary will appear in court at a later date.
