Tournament features more than 40 teams

EMC Sports - Smiths Falls will be known as Cubtown, Ontario all weekend long with the return of its huge girls hockey tournament.

All the fun of the 20th Bell Cubtown Tournament starts today (Feb. 4) and continues right through to Sunday evening at both the Memorial Community Centre and Youth Arena.

This year's tournament will again feature more than 40 teams in eight divisions, with action running from Thursday evening right through Sunday at the Community Centre and Youth Arena. Every Smiths Falls team will be in action other than the atom rep. and midget rep. teams.

Those divisions that were filled are novice house, novice C, atom house, peewee house, peewee BB, bantam house, bantam B and midget house. Most of the teams competing are from within the Ottawa District Women's Hockey Association (Kemptville, Carleton Place, Kanata, Nepean, Cornwall) but others are traveling here from as far away as Madawaska, Oshawa and Eganville.

Several Cubs teams either lead or are near the top of the standings in their respective divisions within the ODWHA and should be involved in the semifinals and finals on Sunday.

For more information, and to track results throughout the weekend, log on to the SFGHA website at www.sfgha.goalline.ca.

The girls hockey association isn't the only group welcoming visitors here from out of town.

Saturday and Sunday, Gratton Lanes will be home to the White Cane Bowling Tournament which features participants from Woodstock, Waterloo, Barrie, Kingston, Ottawa Pembroke, Smiths Falls and two teams from Hamilton.

Opening ceremonies take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday with bowling continuing through most of the weekend. Friday through Sunday, visitors will be enjoying local hospitality including the TGIF dinner at the Legion, a welcoming wine and cheese at the Comfort Inn as well as brunches both Saturday and Sunday.

A warm welcome to town for all of our guests this weekend.

Here's one more reminder about the bottle and penny drive taking place this Sunday, Feb. 7 in support of the Smiths Falls major midget B Bears hockey team.

The team has been working hard fundraising for several weeks now to help offset the costs of participating in the CAN/AM tournament at Lake Placid, N.Y., in April.

Anyone wishing to donate pop cans, beer bottles and cans, liquor and wine bottles or pennies would be greatly appreciated. They can leave them on their porches, stairs or in the driveways.

Please call Darlene at 613-283-1657 or Sonja at 613-283-9554 for pick up.

If the Bears are to make any sort of push toward the playoffs, it will have to start with Friday's home game against the Cumberland Grads.

The club had a chance to put a bit of a squeeze on the two teams they're chasing Carleton Place and Kemptville by winning both ends of a home-and-home series with the Canadians last weekend. They got off to a good start with a 4-3 win at home on Friday but some undisciplined play and bad luck combined to do them in, 3-2, on Sunday in Carleton Place.

With 10 points to make up against the 73's the task certainly won't be easy. But the young club, which continues to play with plenty of heart, still has 13 games remaining (two with Kemptville).

While it may be a long shot made even longer if they continue to take undisciplined penalties at inopportune times it's not impossible.
