2010 Winter Carnival promises lots of fun for whole family
Posted Feb 4, 2010 By EMC NewsEMC Lifestyle - The final schedule is in and it promises something for everyone. That's the verdict for next weekend's annual Smiths Falls Winter Carnival.
The schedule opens on Friday, Feb. 12 and includes a wide array of activities, starting with a visit to Heritage House Museum to view 'Treasures in the Attic' exhibit and 'Prints from the Past, Frances Jones Collection'. The museum is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Also during the day, there's 4-hand euchre at the Seniors Activity Centre, and a free Carnival Skate at the Youth Arena (3:30 to 4:30 p.m.).
Come out and see the stars with members of the Smiths Falls Amateur Astronomy Group in Centennial Park from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. If the weather cooperates, viewers will catch a glimpse of Orion Nebula, Mars, Pleiades cluster and maybe even Saturn.
The Legion hosts a TGIF dinner at the Legion, there's an 'Olympic Night' at the Curling & Squash Club that features free curling and squash for novice participants, a 'Pretty in Pink' breast cancer fundraiser at the County Fair Mall (see separate story), a Valentine's Dance hosted by the Smiths Falls and District Club for Youth, 7-10 p.m., and Carnival Bingo at the OYB on Victoria Avenue sponsored by the Rotary Club.
Saturday, Feb. 13 so far features the Lions Club Pancake Breakfast at the Legion starting at 8 a.m. Tickets will be available at the door.
Bring your team and a broom for a friendly game of TinCan Curling (weather permitting) starting at 11 a.m. that morning at the Kinsmen Park rink. Vendors are welcome to register for a table at the Craft/Bake Sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Recreation Centre (in the town hall across from Tim Hortons). The EMC's Great Chili Cook-off starts at noon at the Legion Branch 95 followed by the Carnival Jam Session downstairs from 2-5 p.m.
There's another Carnival Skate at the Youth Arena (2:30 p.m.), and there's more star gazing in Centennial Park starting at 6 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 14 features a 'Family Fun 'Free' Afternoon, featuring a variety of activities throughout the town such as broomball and skating. Call Betty Laronde (613-283-1490 for more information).
The Carnival Movie at Premier Cinemas will be The Tooth Fairy, sponsored by Chimo Elementary School. The annual Friends of the Library Trivia Challenge at the Legion starts at 1:30 p.m. Call 613-283-2911 for more information.
And the Jr. A Bears' Valentine's Day game against the Hawkesbury Hawks starts at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Community Centre.
