Arlie's has everything for the Smiths Falls book lover

EMC Business - The following is part of a series of articles focused on members of the Smiths Falls & District Chamber of Commerce.

It was almost 30 years ago when Arlie's Books got its start. Originally the store opened by Glen and Arlie Beaupre was a second hand shop containing anything from furniture, appliances and yes - books! It wasn't long before Arlie's passion for books and reading reflected in the growing inventory of books that started to fill the shelves.

Arlie's books had been born!

The books grew in numbers, slowly inching out the furniture and appliance and becoming the exclusive content of the store. Arlie had a tremendous love of books and a talent in being able to match the right book to the right person.

I remember her plucking books from the shelves with confidence when a customer asked her to recommend a book or author to them. I also recall those customers coming back later exclaiming how wonderful the book was and asking her to choose them another one.

Arlie "borrowed" a stamp set from her granddaughters in the 1980s using them to create a unique pricing system for her books. Each book is stamped with a symbol, to find a book's price the customer matches up the symbol on the book to price charts around the store. Arlie ran the store until the fall of 2008 when she passed away, and I, Kerri Murphy, her granddaughter, picked up where she left off.

Our store is filled with thousands of quality pre-owned and many new books. Anyone who loves books knows that reading can be an expensive hobby, however at Arlie's we sell our books at a fraction of regular retail prices. We encourage our customers to bring in their books, we will take a look through them and offer them a store credit on any books we can use.

We mainly carry paperback fiction, with sections for contemporary and historical romance, true crime, horror, western, mystery, classics, sci-fi and many more genres. We have your favourite authors and endeavour to keep on top of what's current and popular. If we don't have what you are looking for we note it in our "wanted" book and attempt to track down the books for you. With so many books, I was very pleased to have been able to expand the store in November 2009.

The store is now twice its original size, and we have expanded sections for cookbooks, health, New Age, and many other fiction and non-fiction books. We invite you to come in and check out our new store and view our great selection. We are located at 32 Market St., Smiths Falls and can be reached at 613-283-0116. Our hours are Monday, Tuesday 10-4 (closed on Wednesdays), Thursday, Friday 10-4, and Saturday 10-2. We are closed on Sundays.
