Council supports addition of Confederation Bridge to funding application

Wanting to take advantage of federal funding while it is available, Smiths Falls town council has added a major fix of the Confederation Bridge to the list of items it is seeking approval for under the Community Adjustment Fund.
Adopting a recommendation by staff, council decided at a special Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting last Wednesday evening to proceed with option 2 in the application process for the “Smiths Falls Upper Rideau Canal Basin Redevelopment Project,” which included repairs to the small bridge that passes through Centennial Park.
As CAO Wayne Brown mentioned, the bridge requires an estimated $2,000,000 in work with the bulk of it being infrastructure. As a result of the joints where the steel beams connect on the bridge having been allowed to rust, the entire underside of the bridge will have to be replaced, he said.
“You are almost rebuilding the bridge,” he stated.
