Carnival time coming soon

EMC Events - If you would like to organize an event for this year's Smiths Falls Winter Carnival, carnival organizers would like to know.

The schedule of events is currently being prepared for the Feb. 12 to 14 festivities and carnival co-ordinator Margo Loughren is interested in knowing what community groups, businesses or individuals plan to participate and how. Among the events already confirmed are the Lions Pancake Breakfast, the Great Chili Cook-off sponsored by the Record News EMC, the 13th annual Trivia Challenge hosted by Friends of the Library and the Family Day of activities organized by Betty Laronde and friends.

"It's still early," Loughren said on Monday. "At this point, we are just asking groups interested in doing something to come forward."

The number to call for those wanting to get involved in the upcoming carnival as an event organizer is 613-283-4124, ext. 122. Loughren can also be e-mailed at mloughren@smithsfalls.ca.

Last year's carnival, held on Feb. 5 to 8, saw "great" participation, according to Loughren.

"There were lots of people out," she said.

Over the years, there have been fewer and fewer communities in eastern Ontario holding a winter carnival.

As to why the tradition has continued here when it has died out elsewhere, Loughren believes one of the reasons is "community spirit," not only in terms of people taking part but also getting involved as a volunteer.

"We are lucky to have so many great volunteers," she said.
