Still time to donate

Posted Jan 14, 2010 By EMC News

EMC Editorial - While the United Way campaign of Lanark County may have officially ended back in November, there is still time to have your contribution added to the year's total.

That's because the books don't officially close until February. That's when monies returning to the county from Ottawa where government employees have redirected their contribution to their home community through the 'Give Where You Live' program are added. Until then, anyone who intended to make a donation but forgot or did not have the chance to do so earlier can still get it in.

And every dollar counts. With a goal set at $370,000, the most recent total announced last week is close to $263,000. That leaves more than $100,000 to raise.

Failing to meet the goal would have serious repercussions for the 16 member agencies such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, senior home support programs, Children's Aid Society and youth groups. These organizations receive limited or no government support and count on the funding received from the United Way to keep them going.

Thousands of the county's most vulnerable citizens, from the very young to the elderly, make use of United Way member agency programs every year. Without the financial backing, many of these programs might have to be scaled back or eliminated altogether.

Anyone who would like to donate to the campaign is asked to do so soon. Call the United Way office at 613-253-9074, log on to the website at www.lanarkunitedway.com or email unitedway@trytel.com.
